DETAILS: Sunset Promotions and blasthaus have teamed up to turn Valentine’s upside-down with the darkly delicious Black Valentine’s Masquerade. This midnight garden of evil will feature legendary UNKLE producer indie-electro/breakbeat zombies Evil 9. Local support will be provided by Motion Potion, Eric Sharp, Capt. Kirk, and Nisus.
Described once as the Hunter S. Thompson of DJs, James Lavelle’s career has spanned the last 18 years, and at 32 he remains as individual a figure in contemporary music as he was as a teenager, when he first gate-crashed his way in with the genre-shattering MoWax records. Back then he was obsessed with early street culture, DJing with Gilles Peterson at That’s How It Is (the legendary club which lasted over 10 years), working with the visionary designer Nigo on Bathing Ape, and launching a label in MoWax. Now he divides time between his internationally-renowned DJ career, his UNKLE act with singer/producer Richard File, and a brand new independent set-up: Surrender-All, which combines music, fashion and art.
Evil Nine is a DJ duo comprising members Tom Beaufoy and Pat Pardy. Their musical style is primarily classified as breakbeat, although it additionally encompasses other influences. he pair has developed a reputation amongst both fans and critics as not being afraid to push the boundaries of what is considered breakbeat music, and tend to incorporate a multitude of styles into their DJ sets. As well as regularly playing at various nightclubs both in the UK and Europe they have held residencies at Fabric Nightclub in London and Audio in Brighton, and they currently hold the position of "Super-Residents" at Urban Gorilla in Sheffield. In October 2008, Evil 9 released their second full-length release “They Live” which received glowing reviews such as the following from URB…
“Dark, heavy, and calculated. DJ duo Evil Nine go all in for their second zombie-inspired mosaic, They Live!. Pounding electro drums, ravenous punk basslines, and horror-movie synths—a sonic elixir as enticing as the music it celebrates. Sure, the Daft Punk comparison is easy (and borderline insulting)—a DJ duo crafting unpredictable break beats is a familiar, beloved narrative—but it’s also easy to overlook Evil Nine’s multidimensional approach. Listen close and you hear early Prince, 80’s rock, Suicide and Black Flag, and even a little TV On The Radio. The peculiar electro-metal duo creates an unstoppable soundtrack for the New Year. A soundbed of pleasure and pain. Daft Punk did it first. But Evil Nine do it better.”
